Abstract

This research delves into the artistic comprehension of the shaman image across different stages of evolution in Kazakhstan’s professional school of fine arts. Over several generations, artists have offered their creative interpretations of the nation’s pre-Islamic past, encompassing its rituals, traditions, ceremonies and the everyday life of the Kazakh nomadic communities. This article examines several artworks featuring shamans as central figures, created using a wide array of artistic tools and techniques, from traditional painting and crafts of applied arts to experimental forms of contemporary art such as actions and performances. These include works by Kuanysh Yessirkeyev (painting), Abdrashit Sydykhanov (painting), Zeynelkhan Mukhamedzhan (keste embroidery), Moldakul Narymbetov and the Kyzyl Tractor group (actions, performances and painting). Regardless of the art form, these artists portray the shaman in diverse transformations in terms of artistic style, semantic meaning and philosophical interpretation. This archetype from the distant past exemplifies how cultural heritage regains its relevance today.
